The House By The River

This project was described to us as ‘being handed the poisoned chalice’. Well, it certainly wasn’t easy but the location was superb being right on the side of the river Trieux and only a short walk from where we live.

The border was in desperate need of a makeover being a tangled mess of brambles, matted ivy, leggy shrubs etc. The clients remit was for a maintenance free area with interest throughout the holiday season.

The House By The River

Day 1

So, first things first, and the whole area has to be cleared and made ready for planting.

Clearing the mess

All of this was taken away by wheelbarrow up a path to a trailer and taken to the refuse centre.

Half way there

That's My Girl!

Not much more!

All cleared and ready for terracing.

The start of the membrane

Nearly there!

Job done!

We are really pleased with the results and so is everyone that has seen it so far. The plants will take a while to mature but will eventually bush up and spread out. The membrane will keep any weeds back. The covering is a mix of crushed sea shells, gravel, rocks, shells and drift wood. The plants include  Agapanthus, lavander, various grasses and herbs amongst others.  Now, instead of a dark and overgrown area that was out of control, the border reflects the light and brings the seashore into the garden.
